La Forza delle Rovine | The Power of Ruins

Condition checking and supervision of installation of the works presented in the exhibition, The Power of Ruins, held from 8 October to 31 January 2016 at the Museo Nazionale Romano. 120 works from public and private collections in Italy and abroad form a wide-ranging discourse on ruins: evidences of the past, places of memory, traces of war, records of natural disasters, signs of damage to the environment. Ruins are investigated in their duplicity: warning about destruction and regenerating force.

Στο συνέδριο με θέμα «Η συντήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς: προκλήσεις και επαναπροσδιορισμοί», που πραγματοποιείται στις 25-29 Μαΐου 2015 στην Αθήνα στο χώρο της Τεχνόπολης στο Γκάζι και στο Νέο Μουσείο Ακρόπολης ο Βασίλης Αργυράτος και η Φωτεινή Φραγκάκη συμμετέχουν με ανακοίνωση τοίχου, με τίτλο «Dilemmas in Conservation of Modern and Contemporary Art: The case of Chryssa’s «Newspaper Portfolio».

Η έκθεση καλύπτει την πρώιμη, μέση και ύστερη περίοδο του Βυζαντίου, όπως αυτές αποτυπώνονται στον ελλαδικό χώρο, από τον 4ο έως τον 15ο αιώνα, παρουσιάζοντας ένα πλούσιο απόθεμα από σπάνιες επιγραφικές και νομισματικές μαρτυρίες, χειρόγραφους κώδικες, γλυπτά, αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία, μωσαϊκά δάπεδα, ψηφιδωτά, τοιχογραφίες και φορητές εικόνες, έργα μικροτεχνίας, και κεραμικής, βαρύτιμα υφάσματα και οτιδήποτε άλλο επιτρέπει στους επισκέπτες να σχηματίσουν μια πληρέστερη εικόνα για το βυζαντινό πολιτισμό.

Ομάδα συντηρητών προετοίμασε τα αντικείμενα, σύνταξε δελτία κατάστασης, συνόδευσε τα αντικείμενα και επέβλεψε τον τρόπο ανάρτησης τους.

The exhibition presents a generous source of rare epigraphic and numismatic evidence, handwritten codices, sculpture and architectural members, mosaic pavements and wall mosaics, wall-paintings and icons, ceramics and works of the minor arts, precious textiles and impressive metalwork such as silver- and copperware as well as gold jewellery. In other words anything that will enable visitors to form a fuller picture of the Byzantine civilization with relative ease.

Το τμήμα συντήρησης επιμελήθηκε τα δελτία κατάστασης των αντικειμένων για την έκθεση, Relics of the Past Treasures of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Population Exchange: From the Benaki Museum Collections (Κειμήλια από το παρελθόν : Θησαυροί της ελληνορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και η Ανταλλαγή των πληθυσμών), που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Γενεύη. Επίσης ομάδα συντηρητών συνόδευσε τα αντικείμενα στην από την Ελλάδα στην Ελβετία και έκανε το στήσιμο της έκθεσης. Η έκθεση εγκαινιάζει τη λειτουργία του «Μουσείου Χριστιανικής Τέχνης» στο Ορθόδοξο Κέντρο του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου στο Chambésy Γενεύης, παρουσιάζοντας τα κειμήλια που έφεραν οι πρόσφυγες στην Ελλάδα μετά την ανταλλαγή των πληθυσμών.

The convention signed by Greece and Turkey in 1923, mandating the exchange of Christian and Muslim populations, provided for the transference of movable communal property by the members of both communities. In the case of the Greek-Christian populations of Asia Minor (Anatolia), the Pontos (Black Sea) and Eastern Thrace, their communal property consisted of the ecclesiastical silverware, embroidery, icons, liturgical manuscripts and books, which comprised the contents of the sacristies in their churches and monasteries.
The 90 liturgical objects, icons and vestments displayed in this exhibition originate in areas where medieval and later Greek culture flourished. Their provenance and inscribed dedications indicate the historical course of the Christian populations in the Ottoman empire setting them within the administrative and political framework which enabled them to thrive, and highlight their regional characteristics.
